BREASTFEEDING CAMPAIGN

In connection with World Breastfeeding Week (August 7-13 2006), the Department of Health, WHO and UNICEF held a National Technical Conference on Breastfeeding “Katibayan ng Breastfeeding” at the Century Park Hotel last August 1-2 2006.

Key messages during this Conference were on the “Global Evidence on Breastfeeding” by Dr. Jean-Marc Olive, Country Representative WHO and  “Challenges to Protect Breastfeeding” by Dr. Nicholas Alipui, Country Representative UNICEF.  For his part, our very own Secretary of Health, Dr. Francisco Duque III, spoke on “Breastfeeding in the Philippines: The Critical Role of Medical Doctors”.

Following these key messages were a “Testimonial of a Breastfeeding Mom” and other  lectures and film showing tackling the rationale of breastfeeding and how to encourage mothers to do it, the present breastfeeding situation in various hospitals and the “Milk Code Implementing Rules and Regulations”.  An Interactive Session on “Overcoming Hindrances to Optimal Breastfeeding” ensued after all these lectures.

The Conference ended with a good note of commitments from various sectors and individual medical and allied medical professionals.

The Philippine Pediatric Society, a staunch supporter of this Breastfeeding Campaign, was represented at the Conference by no one less than the President herself, Dr. Jocelyn Yambao-Franco.
